Here is how to use Categories and Tags the Most Right Way, and the Most Efficient Way:

  • Each Post must have at least one category, and can have 0 to unlimited number of tags
  • Categories makes more sense, as a broad definition of all your related content
  • Tags are just more specific description of what your content is about
  • Categories can also be displayed as a Widget on Most Themes

    • you publish a post attached to a category “food,” the URL will look like this: http://example.com/category/food/
    • You published the same post with a tag as “rice”, the URL will look like this: http://example.com/tag/rice/

So, if you have a recipe blog – where you post different Meal Recipes and, you write a new Blog Post with the Following Title: “How to Prepare a Healthy Fat Free Lemon Salmon and Brown Rice Meal in under 30 min”. So What do you think the Category and the Tags will be for this post?

A Category can be: Fast Meals, or May Be Healthy Meals and Tags can be: Salmon, Brown Rice, Lemon.

Whenever you write a new Blog Post, make sure that always assign one general category per blog post, and as many tags as possible that specifically defines your blog post. This will make it easier for your readers to sort out your content through different general categories.
Also….as a bonus tip, make sure that when you assign categories or tags, is that you go through google keyword tool, and research for relevant keywords to be utilized under your categories and your tags. This will definitely help improve your SEO effort.
